THE OPEN, DISTANCE AND e-LEARNING (ODeL) CAMPUS UNDERWENT MIDTERM PERFORMANCE CONTRACT EVALUATION SUCCESSFULLY

The Director, ODel Campus addressing the staff during the review on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 of the previous day's evaluation work, in the University Towers, Room 402

The Open, Distance  & e-Learning (ODeL) Campus underwent midterm performance contracting (PC) evaluation/review for FY 2019/2020 period on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 successfully. This took the whole day right from 8:00am up to and including 4:30pm. at the University of Nairobi towers, Room 401.

Kicking off the exercise, Dr. Grace Kiringa, the Manager, Transformation, Performance Management and Reform Unit (TPMRU) with her team from PC Office challenged her host, reminding them in the presence of Professor Christopher M. Gakuu, the Director, ODeL Campus of the need to address pertinent issues raised and have things done in the prescribed format. She pointed out that indicators were well managed and that almost all units had done well in crosscutting issues and service delivery. Evidence was found to be well packaged, with members of staff exuding happiness and motivation, an indication of attitude change.

She however, pointed out the following as areas for improvement: Staff to be sensitized on strategic plan of campus, websites to be developed for the Regional Learning Centres which as yet lacked internet. Others were the urgent need for the development of postgraduate tracking systems, ensuring students attachment is a reality especially to the Learning Centres, implementation of corruption prevention committees at various Learning Centres,  with advocacy on provision of network (internet) to allow enhanced Biometric Student registration drives in those centres. By and large,  she observed that there was notable improvement across board among the ODeL Campus units.

All the Regional Learning Centres inclusive of Isiolo, Eldoret, Kisii, Meru and Nairobi, Nakuru, Machakos, Wote, Kitui, Bungoma, Kitale and Nyeri were evaluated, save for Kisumu and Mombasa whose evaluation were scheduled for later dates: Kisumu on Friday, February 28, 2020 while Mombasa's falls last on Friday, March 13, 2020. Upon completion of the whole exercise, the evaluators gave an encouraging verdict since all the units did very well, and only fell short of being declared "excellent". A centre like Nakuru, surprised everybody when voted as one of those which had performed best, across the ODeL units. In fact, in the words of the Manager, TPMRU, it was noted that  almost all the units reviewed on that day had made tremendous improvement.

The Director, ODeL Campus on his part, commended everybody who contributed toward the tremendous improvement in this FY 2019/2020 midterm PC evaluation, cautioning however, that much more need to be done towards June 2020 exercise, marking the end of the FY 2019/2020, which was fast approaching.
