ARUA Center of Excellence for Non-Communicable Diseases – PhD Support Programme 2020 Introduction and Purpose The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence for Non-Communicable Diseases(ACE-NCD) hosted by the University of Nairobi (Kenya) is a partnership of five African Universities including the University of Ghana (Ghana), University of Ibadan (Nigeria), Makerere University (Uganda), and University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). The ACE-NCD provides a platform for creation of a long-term strategic network of researchers in African Universities with a focus on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) research. The ACE-NCD builds on the strengths of the core members through a hub and spoke model to strengthen intra-African collaboration, and collaboration between the network and the rest of the world. The ACE-NCD has received a grant from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) through the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to support and strengthen research capacity among the ACE-NCD universities and their partners in Africa. Part of the grant is available to support PhD students’ research. ACE-NCD PhD Support Programme The ACE-NCD PhD programme shall support two PhD students who are about to embark on the research phase of their studies. Scope of Support This call targets students currently enrolled in PhD studies in any of the five ACE-NCD member universities. Students must have had their research proposals approved and are near completion of their PhD studies. Funding is available up to £10,000 per project and will be tenable for one year in order to support the students to complete their studies. All work must be completed by September 31, 2021. PREPARATIONS AND COMMENCEMENT OF ONLINE LEARNING | Sensitization/training on Online Learning: Monday, 7th September 2020 - Friday, 18th September 2020 During this training; students will be trained on how to attend classes online via various platforms like eClass, SOMAS, Google meet All students are required to attend the sensitization/training sessions. A schedule for the week will be provided in due course. Commencement of Online teaching and learning: MONDAY 21st SEPTEMBER 2020 8.00 A.M. Lectures begin. INCOMING FIRST YEAR STUDENTS ONLINE REGISTRATION | The University of Nairobi will commence the new academic year on Monday, August 31, 2020. Applicants who received a formal letter of offer to join the University this academic year 2020/2021 are required to complete the registration process online. Registration is the process by which you formally enroll at the University. The online registration window for all new students will open from Monday 24th to Monday 31st August 2020. All applicants are required to register during this period. To register: STEP 1: Applicants can access the University of Nairobi student self–service portal Students Management Information System (SMIS): https://smis.uonbi.ac.ke/ . To log in, Students will use the log in details sent to them via email; or write to undergraduate: admissions@uonbi.ac.ke or Post graduate: gs@uonbi.ac.ke to request for the log in details. STEP 2: Once an applicant logs in, they are required to download the comprehensive Joining Instructions (Academic, Legal and Health Requirements). This document contains important forms that need to be filled out and uploaded on to the system. Print all the forms and fill them out in full as guided (steps 1-22). Scan the filled documents and upload. Please ensure you scan your passport photograph and upload it in the system. Place your request for student ID as detailed in the Joining Instructions document JI/17. The IDs will be availed to the respective Deans’/Directors’ offices once printed for your collection. Use this checklist to ensure you have all the required documents: REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT CHECKLIST STEP 3: The applicant can then access the fee structure on the SMIS system with guidelines on how to pay the prescribed fees. Please note that separate guidelines apply for Government-sponsored (module 1) and Self-sponsored (Module 2). STEP 4: Once payment is made, students are requested to wait for at least 48 hours then log back into the system to complete the online registration and submit a request for registration. Students can only submit their registration request once the portal is opened on Monday, 24th August 2020. Applicants will receive an SMS alert once the registration process is confirmed. STEP 5: Upon confirmation, applicants will then log in to the portal: https://smis.uonbi.ac.ke/ to complete the student profile, fill out all the sections on the table provided and create a student’s email account and an active directory account as guided. Student email accounts are critical, students will ONLY receive official communication from the University on this email address. ODeL CAMPUS FY 2019/2020 MID TERM PERFORMANCE CONTRACTING (PC) EVALUATION | The Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Campus is set for mid term performance contracting evaluation/review for the FY 2019/2020 period on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. This review exercise for the first half of the contracting period in question, is covering the six months with effect from July 1, 2019 up to and including December 31, 2019. The general schedule by the Manager, Transformation, Performance Management and Reform Unit (TPMRU) blocks ten days during which the Colleges will have their units reviewed with effect from February 17, 2020 all through to March 6, 2020. The following are the units under ODeL Campus scheduled for review on the selfsame day of Tuesday, right from 8:00am through to 5:00pm: Open Learning Programmes, Educational Programmes, Principal Instructional Designer (PID) Courseware Development and Production Division, with its departments (units) of Science Programmes, Humanity Programmes and e-Learning, PID Programme Delivery and Learner Support also with its respective units/centres such as e-Learning, Eldoret, Bungoma, Embu, Kitale, Kisii, Isiolo, Kitui, Machakos, Meru, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, and Wote, next will be the Research Evaluation and Life Long Courses (RELLC), Deputy Director, and ultimately Director, ODeL Campus in that order. The programme for day 7 in the calender of mid term reviews is very packed only punctuated with both tea and lunch breaks between 10:30am to 11:00am and 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm respectively. The units having had their own midterm mock reviews on Monday, February 17, 2020 and a follow up meeting for addressing the identified gaps scheduled for Thursday, February 20, 2020.
