The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Professor Stephen Gitahi Kiama, today graced the ODeL Campus during the opening session for performance contract evaluation and negotiation for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 respectively.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Professor Stephen Gitahi Kiama, today graced the ODeL Campus community during the opening meeting session for performance contract evaluation and negotiation for the fiscal years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 respectively. The VC was accompanied by Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, the DVC FPD. The ODeL team was headed by Prof. Christopher Mwangi Gakuu, Director, and Prof. Harriet J. Kidombo, his Deputy.
In his address to ODeL Campus fraternity, the VC pointed out that ODeL mandate was quite important and necessary not only to the University of Nqairobi, but the entire country. He said, that ODeL is to accord all professionals opportunity to learn while still practising their profession and would not need to break away from their work for whatever number of years their study would require them to be away, whether it is a four year course or even longer. The VC made it clear that having a school in ODeL Campus would only be crowding it's noble mandate, denying it a chance to be focussed on its core mandate of coordinating learning on online platform in the entire university. He encouraged thinking through it so that the bigger ODeL vision does not get lost.
He further added that it should be ensured that ODeL avails UoN programmes to the citizens of Kenya and beyond. It was necessary also to guard against enlisting people, "villagers" not qualified to deliver courses to UoN students from various regions of the nation. That it would be difficult to claim that such students are properly guided to qualify being produced or "sired" by the University.
On Performance Contract evaluation and negotiation, he observed that the campus has gone through the exercise severally and there was no need to fear. He encouraged managers who signed the PC to take it personally for their performance. He wished all, 'the very best' as they settle to do best what they have always done in the past, during the five days of evaluation and negotiation.
The DVC FPD, on her part, encouraged the ODeL team and particularly expressed her joy that the Director ODeL Campus with his team has been doing a good job in the past, which should even be bettered.
The TPRMU Manager, Dr. Grace N. Kiringa, addressing the online opening meeting session, gave the guidelines as to what would be required during the evaluation and negotiation exercise. Firstly she appreciated all the ODeL team for good performance during the midterm FY 2019/2020 PC evaluation in February 2020. She intimated that only four units would be evaluated today, Friday, September 4, 2020 due to the fact that some of her team members were on different assignments. The Evaluatees due for evaluation are Open Learning, Educational Programmes, Science and e-Learning Coordinators. They were expected to have shared the google drive content uploaded with relevant evidence, duly updated pcmis, signed PC Matrix for FY 2019/2020 and annual budgets. The evaluators would on their part be expected to share the meeting links with the evaluatees..
Professor Gakuu on his part, addressing the opening meeting session as the host, appreciated the VC for finding time to address ODeL community and expressing the excitement of all members. At the same time he appreciated Dr. Grace Kiringa, the TPRMU manager, for guiding well the pc evaluations and changing the narrative previously held with PC Office in the past. He said that ODeL Campus team were, like in the past, going to put their best foot forward during the evaluation and negotiation for the FY 2019/2020 and FY2020/2021 respectively.
The opening meeting session programme ran between 7:30 and 8:28 ante meridian having been committed into the hands of Almighty God in prayers with thanks given by Prof. Harriet J, Kidombo, Deputy Director and Dr. Lilian Joice Omutoko, the Coordinator, Nairobi Regional Learning Centre, respectively.
