Thesis / Project Title
DETERMINANTS OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL GOVERNMENT-CONSTITUENCY DEVELOPMENT FUNDED PROJECTS IN KENYA: A CASE OF RONGO CONSTITUENCY, MIGORI COUNTY
Thesis / Project Abstract
The study investigated the determinants of community participation in NG-CDF projects in Rongo constituency. The objectives were to establish the extent to which demographic characteristics, cultural beliefs, level of awareness, and accountability influence community participation in NG-CDF projects. Yamane's formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 397 respondents. It used a descriptive survey design. The collected data coded, fed into the SPSS and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the demographic characteristics significantly influenced community participation in NG-CDF projects. It also established that culture did not affect community participation to a great extent. It was further realized that the level of awareness greatly influenced community participation in NG-CDF projects. The study also revealed that accountability influenced community participation because NG-CDF was associated with very high levels of corruption, which discouraged and caused apathy among the constituents. Cultural values such as respect for communal work, obedience to elders, and those in leadership should be integrated into projects to strengthen them while those that negatively impact participation, such as denying women leadership positions, be eradicated tactfully. The government should develop strategies that shall enable every village and ward administrator to have copies of the NG-CDF Act, making it possible for them to avail it to people to read/understand the contents. Similar studies should be done in other constituencies to compare results. Studies should also be done in other counties to come up with a policy framework on community participation in NG-CDF projects countrywide.
